It’s all about G-Dragon: Heartbreaker review and his fashion evolution

A yo! finally! Is this what you’ve been waiting for? Brand new GD!

G-Dragon’s solo venture could not have come at a better time. Girl groups have gone and multiplied, so there’s some serious need for testosterone in the Kpop music scene. Not only is his solo debut very timely, it’s a very good business strategy as well. Big Bang just came back from successful promotions in Japan, 2NE1 has been launched and are taking a little time off, while non-YG groups such as 2PM, SM’s Super Junior, SHINee and SNSD are off the music charts. Not to mention GD’s single and MV release happened on his birthday no less! You couldn’t turn down our birthday boy, now can you?

But all that auspicious elements did not come with stumbling blocks. Already he’s been thrown with plagiarism accusations, criticizing his style and ultimately doubting his skills as a composer and producer. So after all the hype and anticipation, is Heartbreaker worth it?

Based on the teasers and photos we got to see that GD was working on some kind of symbolism here. The video itself was full of subtle and non-subtle meanings! Quite a deviation from the usual YG style of MVs that can get quite melodramatic (“Lies,” Gummy’s “Sorry,” “Haru Haru”)—and yes, thank goodness nobody dies, there’s no one coughing blood, no one gets murdered, and no one goes to jail.

The MV starts off with a scene where GD sits in a futuristic setting with Harajuku style girls (think Gwen Stefani) lazing around eating apples, and you can see a tree in the background—gasp! Could this be a symbol for Adam and Eve’s infamous forbidden tree? Well, technically apple was commonly mistaken for the forbidden fruit. Anyways, those things are not so obvious as his silver/blonde-ish hair and pale skin! The whole look and feel of the video is so much different from what’s been done before. It’s artsy, weird, inexplicable and unusual—IT’S VERY G-DRAGON.

In terms of the music though, taking all my GD-Big Bang bias aside, while watching through the first half of it I pressed stop. I couldn’t help but think I’ve already heard a part of it before. Sure, the beginning rap sounds a bit like Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” but a teensy weensy part of the chorus caught me off guard. I hate to say it, but it reminds me of “Radar” by Britney Spears. But only a little part. *gets bricked*

But that doesn’t say that the song isn’t good. HEARTBREAKER IS HELLA GOOD. It’s catchy, dance-y, strong and it’s NOT too in-your-face-hip-hop that’s too hard to understand. It can appeal to a lot of audiences whether they’re hip hop fans or not. It sorta fuses Euro-techno, disco and synth sounds. The choreography is pretty simple, but it matches the beat of the song so well. Notice the white masked backup dancers matching his album cover. GD looks fierce, he’s angry, he’s badass and he knows it. I love the white blanket concept and the “underworld” type of setting. And in true Big Bang/YG style that always shows outtakes or previews, GD ends his MV with possibly his next song “Breathe.”

Snippets of Heartbreaker lyrics translation

I don’t give in no matter what, the useful things still haven’t died

Only you caused a broken body, dead dreams, lost heart

If it’s for you, this one body will fly, will rush to where you’re at

However you say goodbye and goodbye to me

I said what’s the reason you don’t want me

Tell me all about your confident (facial) expressions, do it sadly

Even if I say alright or ask for a chance

I don’t like the cold look in your eyes when you turn around once

*No no

Yo ma heart heart heart heart heart breaker

What did I do wrong

Yo ma heart heart heart heart heart breaker

No way no way

I say I’m leaving, I’m really going

To see if you can live well [without me]

This is tedious, this is not going smoothly

My heart’s tragedy no way

I ask the same every day, you say that I’ve changed

Will you please shut your mouth

You speak while knowing who you’re talking to

Now I’m out of control, constantly while being alone

In that spot, that place, it’s goodbye and goodbye

I said what’s the reason you don’t want me

Tell me all about your confident (facial) expressions, do it sadly

Even if I say alright or ask for a chance

I hate the cold smile you have when you turn around once

(My fave part): I’ll still be there (inside your turned off phone)

I’ll still be there (at the mailbox in front of my house)

You..I still…(even if we’re “strangers” now)

I will still be there

GD’s fashion evolution

The Heartbreaker look seems hard to pull off, even bordering on looking like a costume for Halloween (think blond vampire guy from Twilight). But because it’s GD, he worked it! Very metrosexual, androgynous without looking too girly. I really don’t know how to explain it! HOT!

Oh-kayyy. So this style is just… plain CREEPY. There’s no other freakin’ way to put it.

The I-haven’t-taken-a-bath-or-shampoo-for-ten-years hobo look. Very greasy.

The famous duck tail look in “Lies” era.

GD’s look in “Haru Haru” MV and promotions. The headband thing works for him (even setting a trend, Rain was seen wearing one in a perf!) but the whole side-swept mohawk? NO.

Mushroom head.

His recent style in Big Bang’s Japan activities.
Not bad! He’s gone through gazillions of hits and misses. This one post would not be enough to show them all. But my fave would have to be his pretty boy, idol look:

Awww CUTE!! But then again, it’s GD we’re talking about here! GD and the word cute should not be put in the same sentence!

I can’t put how much I like Heartbreaker. So let me just end it with a Jaebeom seal of approval:

  1. I’ve never followed Big Bang or G-dragon but his clothes really caught my attention for his solo debut. The style is something I could see in a fashion editorial like W or Vogue which is not like the space suits of Johnnys or other boy bands. At least give him props for trying something different instead of the cutesy or overdone outfits in k/c/j pop.

  2. darling…i love ur post a lot ^^ keep up the good work 😉 n yes, who cud possibly dislike GD’s style.. he even looked good in the weirdest outfit or style on this planet ..haha.. am exaggerating now..still..love GD for his evolution in songs/style/or whatsoever 😉

Sorry, forgot to add great post! Can’t wait to see your next post!

  4. i can relate to you hon! i LOVE heartbreaker!! and butterfly!

i feel so bad for GD because he work so hard for his album to just get accusations and harsh criterism at the end..

to further more,.. many are comparing his solo to that of Taeyang.. ok.. first.. Taeyang is a R&B artist while GD is a hip-hop rapper.. completely different genre… so people should reallllly not do that..

I WISH GD all the best and hope his album goes down as Number 1 in history.

  5. GD: “Ey yo finally! is this what you’ve been waiting for?”
    Me : YES!

it’s interesting that you used testosterone and GD in the same sentence lol. i havta say that the MV is so deviant in a high fashion way! GD’s natural ability to pull off any look is so inspiring. when i first saw the MV though i immediately got a strong gaga-esque vibe. it’s not just from the diva blonde hair but also from the clothes, accessories, and face-paint/make-up lol plus the overall feel of the MV. and apparently (after reading other people’s comments) i’m not the only one who thought he’s the asian male gaga lol. not complaining though. 😀 i love’s shaun’s choreography for the song too. oh and true! the beat has a strong resemblance to Britney’s radar! thank you!

lol i must show my hyukkie-loving fangirl sister that gif. he looks goofy ditz… in a cute way

    • lol yesss finally somebody else thinks that GD’s song is similar to Britney’s song! i mean, i love GD but his songs are not what you can call original—but that’s because he takes influences from a lot of genres, which is not a bad thing. and everyone’s calling him the male gaga! LOL so true yet disturbing at the same time. but his red face paint is so reminiscent of gaga’s album cover! fierce!

  6. i love da fashion, da lyrics, da whole mv & of course gd. it reflects his personality & shows where he’s at right now.

but jus 4 today i’m tired of all concepts of kpop. i’ll probably change my mind 2moro but right now i actually prefer gd in his vest & joggy bottoms at home in his room playing with gaho^^~

  7. Originality in creative world is so over rated. Nothing is really original anymore because you’re bound to be influenced by so many things you like/around you. I think GD manages to take a little bit of everything and makes it into his own thing 😀 I love the whole Heartbreaker concept.

And I totally agree with this
“The whole look and feel of the video is so much different from what’s been done before. It’s artsy, weird, inexplicable and unusual—IT’S VERY G-DRAGON.”

Love your post & reviews 😀

    • thanks for dropping by!<3 and i agree it's hard to be creative, everything's been done by experts and music legends before and anyone can't help but be influenced by those who have laid opportunities and styles for them.

  8. Love your post and love GD’s style …

  9. i like this photo

  10. amo o G-Dragon do jeito ki ele é
ai dequem dizer ki ele é feio ou sua moda é feia na minha frente mais eu regaçooo
