They say that YOU CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. Well, there are exceptions to that rule – when it comes to choosing album/ CD covers. That is, of course, if you’re not familiar with an artist and if you haven’t heard his or her music yet, what else can you do but look on the cover? That’s because it is (or should be) a reflection of what the artist is all about – as the cliche goes, a picture says a thousand words. It’s different when it comes to choosing BOOKS, because you can always read the summary at the back, or if not, read the praises/comments by book critics. But for music? Well, reading a few song titles and their time duration just won’t be enough.
So… Which one should we take a look at first? The good ones or the bad ones? Let’s prolong our agony for a while and hear the bad news first.
THE DISUNITED COLORS OF JPOP/KPOP
Colors are in for this season. It’s fun, vibrant and loud. I mean, these kinds of colorful photos should call out to you when you’re browsing the CD shelves. But it’s quite difficult to pull off, as it can end up making the artists look too matchy matchy or just plain too tacky. And these artists didn’t blend in too well with the rainbow colors.
Their single So Hot may be hot in the charts, but their album photo is not. Didn’t they know that leopard prints are so yesterday? It makes them look old. To make things worse, they’re colored prints. Talk about double offense!
SHINEE’s FIRST MINI ALBUM
Skinny colored pants are everywhere. But they’re not for Shinee. What IS up with that guy wearing orange?
I’m a huge fan of Crystal Kay so I was excited about her new single. But her “new music” didn’t sound like anything new at all. And that aside, as for the style of her cover… She could’ve done better.
BOA’s new album Vivid may have great songs (she still has the pop magic) but she looked a bit tired in this cover. It’s ironic since her outfit is colorful and some of her songs are lively but her face just contradicts that.
SPEAKING OF THE FACE…
Her previous album images for “The Face” wasn’t as good as well. I do get that they’re taking it literally but these photos will suit a cosmetics ad better.
Underage skinship! Girl in pink (1st pic, 2nd from the left) looks like she’s gonna pounce on someone any time soon.
AKB48’s album Baby! Baby! Baby! not only has a ditzy and possibly suggestive title, their photos are just that as well. It’s a bit confusing really, you don’t know if they’re trying to be cute or sexy or both, but their otaku fans surely won’t get disappointed!
Berryz Kibou did a bit better, they can’t help but be colorful. They’re young and fun, so it’s okay.
La LEAH DIZON strikes again
Again with the creepy, dead eyes! (See no real difference in eye expression from the 1st pic to the 2nd) This light bulb carnival disaster of an single photo just has too many things going on. And what better way to sell an album than to sell Vanilla ice cream? Vanilla? Get it? Get it?
ON THE OTHER HAND, her COMMUNICATION album cover shot was a whole lot better.
Even if she took it literally (as most of them always do), the style, makeup and overall image suited her better. Her Love Paradox single pic was more attractive though.
FROM COLORED GARBS TO AU NATURALE…. SOME ARTISTS PREFER TO TAKE IT ALL OFF.
Some music reviews I read mentioned that Janel sounds like a Japanese version of The Pussycat Dolls. This photo is a bit reminiscent of Desperate Housewives photoshoot done several months ago.
Her new song is really catchy, though. It’s considered as the hottest comeback this year. You go, girl!
TOHOSHINKI’s BEAUTIFUL YOU. I have to say, it’s a bit underwhelming. Junsu looks like he’s in front of a firing squad. But it’s okay, their music compensates for it. They’re just mind blowing.
KAT-TUN’s QUEEN OF PIRATES AND DON’T U EVER STOP. Not a fan of their outfits individually but when you put them all together, in an odd sort of way it blends well. As for their music, all I have to say is that it’s really difficult to transition from pop to rock. But their DUES single cover was a rehash of their LIPS vid, with Kame channeling Michael Jackson and Koki is just… Koki.
(On a side note..) NOW THIS IS WHAT REAL J-ROCK LOOKS LIKE
Big Bang member Daesung’s solo attempt single “Look at me.” Maybe it should’ve been “DON’T LOOK AT ME!” Seriously. He looks like a karaoke dirty old uncle who wears his shirt with buttons open and hits on underaged girls. Geez.
